Android phones and tablets news:

Crackle video service heads LG, Samsung, and Vizio Smart TVs, Samsung Bluray players

Free video streaming service Crackle is already available on your smart phone, computer, and game console, but today the company announced its expansion to LG, Samsung, and Vizio Smart TVs. The expansion is twofold for Samsung, which is also adding the ad-supported streaming service to its line of Blu-ray players; Crackle characterizes today’s news as the conclusion of a strategy to bring the streaming service to, “all leading smart TV manufacturers.” Of course, that strategy is only complete in a handful of countries thus far — today’s additions apply to only the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia for LG and Samsung, while Vizio Smart TVs in the US and Canada are the only ones to get Crackle. All new iterations of the Crackle app are available via Samsung, LG, and Vizio’s respective app portals.

Google reportedly hiring staff for Nexus call center, to open late October

Posted by wicked October - 11 - 2012 - Thursday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Android Central

Google is recruiting Android enthusiasts to staff a "Nexus call center," according to reports from Geek.com. Google is said to be using a third-party company to recruit from campuses in the San Francisco Bay Area, in time for the next Nexus launch.

An advertisement doesn't mention Google by name, but an ad mentioning a "confidential client" in the Mountain View area, which recently launched an Android tablet doesn't leave much to the imagination. Geek.com reports that it's sources say Google is aiming to have this Nexus call center fully staffed and trained by the end of the month.

A dedicated Nexus call center for its upcoming flagship phone would help Google to bolster its customer service credentials, an area that's been singled out for criticism when earlier Nexus devices launched. It's also adds more weight to recent reports of an LG-built Nexus being announced, and possibly launched, in late October.

Posted by wicked March - 13 - 2012 - Tuesday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Google+

Well, it’s not quite the tablet-friendly app we’ve been waiting for, but, it’ll do. Google+ has gotten something of a mobile facelift, bringing the portable site’s design more in line with that of the Android and iOS mobile apps. The revamp isn’t just visual, it also hides some nice new features, like the ability to reshare posts with just the click of a virtual button. You can check it out now by visiting plus.google.com on your mobile device or by opening m.google.com/apps/plus in your desktop browser.

Android Central weekly photo contest: Food

Posted by wicked March - 6 - 2012 - Tuesday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Food

We're all back home and settled in from Mobile World Congress, and it's time to kick off another weekly photo contest! The subject this week is something near and dear to my heart, and inspired by +Michael Ceriello when we asked what you guys and gals wanted to see. We're talking about food.

Grab your Android phones, head into the kitchen or out to your favorite resturant and show us some delicious eats. The prize this week is a vehicle mount for your phone (or a universal model) from ShopAndroid.com. Perfect for heading out to the grocery store or eatery to feed yourself, and maybe listening to some tunes or trying a new route with Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation on the way.

The rules, as always:

  • You gotta use an Android phone or tablet.
  • One picture per person.
  • You need to tell us the name of the device used to take the pic, any special photo app used, and your name (or psudeonym) so we can give proper credit.
  • Send the picture (as an attachment) and info to [email protected] by Friday evening your local time to qualify.

We'll pick the best and announce the winner Sunday on the blog. Good luck everyone!

Android Central weekly photo contest: Transportation

Posted by wicked January - 24 - 2012 - Tuesday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Transportation

We're back for the second weekly Android Central photo contest, and this week's theme is transportation.  Anything that you use to get from point A to point B is fair game (see our example photo above), and we're looking forward to seeing another round of great pictures from you guys and gals.  Come Sunday, we'll pick the cream of the crop and show them all off (check out last week's finalists, they're amazing) — and the winner this week get's an extended battery from ShopAndroid.com for his or her phone so they can carry a bit of extra juice and take a few more pictures.  We've also adjusted the rules a little, so read the next bit carefully:

  • Pictures must be taken with an Android device.  Yes, your iPhone or DSLR takes great pictures, but we're all about Android here.
  • Only one picture per person.  If you send in more than one, even if it's the best one, you're disqualified.
  • Entries must be accompanied by the name of the phone (or tablet) used to take them, and the name you want used for photo credit should you make the final cut. In other words, we want to know which phone you used!
  • Photos must be sent as an attachement.  With so many entries, we just don't have time to visit your Picasa or Flickr album.

Pick out your best photo, and send it to [email protected]  Good luck to everyone!

Toshiba Thrive 32GB hits rock bottom $300 price; Santa has buyer’s remorse

Posted by wicked December - 30 - 2011 - Friday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Toshiba Thrive

You might want to look away if you just purchased a Honeycomb tablet for Christmas: 1saleaday.com has the 32GB Toshiba Thrive on sale today for a mere $299.99, a full $180 cheaper than the list price you'll find at Best Buy, Amazon, and other retailers. The 10-inch, Tegra 2-powered tablet is no slouch, as we discovered in our review back in August, and while it may not be the prettiest Android tablet out there today, it's hard to pass up for a mere three Benjamins. Hit the source link before midnight tonight to grab one and if anybody sees Santa, break the news gently.
