ASUS pushes Android 4.2 to Transformer Pad TF300, makes TF700 users wait until Q2

Transformer Pad TF300 buyers may have had to compromise on screen resolution, but the little slab’s software support is second to none — ASUS just announced that its entry level Transformer Pad will be its first to taste Android 4.2.2. Customers in the United States can grab the Jelly Bean update over the air starting today, while international users will see regional rollouts throughout the month. Own one of the company’s higher end slates? Sit tight, ASUS says Android 4.2 should roll out to the Transformer Pad Infinity and other devices in Q2 2013. A wait for the virtuous, to be sure.

Android phones and tablets news:

TF300

ASUS has announced that they will begin pushing the Android 4.2 over-the-air update to the Transformer Pad TF300 for folks in the US today. Other regions will follow during the month of March. This makes ASUS, and the TF300, the first non-Nexus tablets to see the 4.2 update, which includes the long awaited multiple user support. In addition to the version bump to 4.2, ASUS says the update will also bring enhanced performance and stability. To go along with the OTA, ASUS will also offer updates for their App Locker, Virtual Keyboard, Lock Screen and Setup Wizard applications.

Also mentioned in the press release are the Transformer Pad Infinity, The MeMo Pad Smart 10-inch, and the MeMo pad, which are slated to receive the 4.2 update during the second quarter of 2013. Notably absent is any mention of 4.2 for the Transformer Prime.

The TF300 was a popular — and very capable — tablet for ASUS last year. With the new features in Android 4.2 it should offer a great experience for owners throughout 2013. Jump past the break to see the full press release.

ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10 review

Posted by wicked February - 28 - 2013 - Thursday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10

ASUS is looking to bring down the cost of owning a full-featured 10-inch tablet, but can it overcome the inherent issues with the form factor?

When it comes to 10-inch Android tablets, there's no doubt that ASUS has been leading the pack when it comes to features, build quality and choice of form factors. From the Google-sanctioned Nexus 7 to the highest end Transformer Pad Infinity, the manufacturer surely knows it's stuff. While other manufacturers seem to make Android tablets as an afterthought, ASUS puts a lot of weight behind its entire tablet lineup.

With this, the MeMo Pad Smart 10 (and smaller brother the 7-inch MeMo Pad), ASUS is hoping to offer the same appealing package of quality specs and build of its high-end devices, but cut back in just a few areas to make it more affordable. The MeMo Pad Smart 10 is retailing at just $299, which certainly sounds like a great deal, so stick around after the break and see how it holds up.

ASUS MeMo Pad tablets launching in the UK beginning early March

Posted by wicked February - 26 - 2013 - Tuesday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Android Central

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

More ASUS related news has emerged from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, this time concerning the UK launch of their MeMo Pad tablets. Both the 7-inch and 10.1-inch tablets will be available to buy in the UK, with the first launching from March 7.

The 10.1-inch ME301T — more commonly referred to as the Smart 10 — is a Tegra 3 packing, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet with an extremely competitive price point of £249. It houses a 1280×800 resolution IPS display, 16GB of on-board storage and will only be available in Midnight Blue at launch with other colors to follow. Several retailers have picked up the MeMo Pad Smart 10 including Currys PCWorld, Tesco and Amazon. Pre-orders should be available from each of these online now, with in-store purchases set to begin on March 7.

The MeMo Pad ME172V — or MeMo Pad 7 as we shall refer to it — again runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but is a more budget oriented offering. It's powered by a 1GHz VIA WM8950 processor, and has a display resolution of 1024×600 with 16GB of on-board storage. The killer feature on the MeMo Pad 7 though is the price, set to arrive for just £129 some time around mid-April.

The full press release can be found after the break.

Alleged Asus Memo Pad 10 press shots appear, launching at MWC?

Posted by wicked February - 3 - 2013 - Sunday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Android Central

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

Asus is no stranger to Android tablets, and so while nothing official by any stretch, it's not at all surprising to hear that a new tablet is reportedly heading to Mobile World Congress later this month. Following on from the already announced MeMo Pad 7, what we see here is allegedly the new MeMo Pad 10.

The MeMo Pad 10 is said to follow on from its 7 inch sibling in hitting a lower price point. Reported specs include a 1280×800 display, a 1.2GHz Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera, 16GB of on board storage with microSD card expansion and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. 12 months ago specs such as these would have put the MeMo Pad 10 at the bleeding edge, but by current — and forthcoming — standards, it would sit in the mid-range, lower price bracket quite nicely.

The source of the images, tabletsmagazine.nl, claims that several Dutch retailers have already begun to offer pre-orders for the MeMo Pad 10, starting as low as €299 (£259/$407), which sounds very competitive for a decent 10 inch tablet. Of course, until it's official, nothing's official. Treat it as you would all leaks, but we'll be in Barcelona in little over three weeks to see just what Asus does bring.

ASUS MeMo Pad 10 makes unexpected appearance, could become official at MWC (video)

Posted by wicked January - 21 - 2013 - Monday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

ASUS MeMo Pad 10 makes unexpected appearance, could become official at MWC video

It’s been but a mere few days since ASUS quietly introduced that Jelly Bean-loaded, 7-inch Memo Pad, though if a recent video shown off on YouTube is to be believed, the company’s got yet another, larger Memo Pad up its sleeve. Such tablet’s said to be the MeMo Pad 10, which has yet to be officially unveiled by the Taiwanese firm but has somehow made its way to the folks over at MobileArena. Just like its smaller sibling, the MeMo Pad 10 is reportedly sporting a flavor of Android’s latest, but, as its moniker would imply, a 10-inch (1280 x 800) display is among the highlights here — other purported specs include a 1.2GHz Tegra 3 CPU, 1GB RAM and 16GB of built-in storage (which could be expanded via microSD). We’ll have to wait and see if ASUS makes a MeMo Pad 10 announcement in a few weeks at Mobile World Congress; until then, however, there’s a video after the break for anyone interested in getting an early peek at the slate.

ASUS announces $149 MeMO Pad

Posted by wicked January - 14 - 2013 - Monday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

ASUS MeMO Pad

Price, not performance, is the key spec for this Nexus 7 lookalike

ASUS has announced a 7-inch budget Android tablet, dubbed the MeMO Pad. At first glance it looks, physically, a bit like the Nexus 7, but this guy's definitely lacking the hardware department by comparison. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it's targeted at emerging markets, where price is more important than power. The MeMO Pad seems to fit that bill with a $149 listing for the lowest storage option.

The MeMO Pad is running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a paltry 1024×600 resolution. (Hey, gotta save somewhere, right?) It's powered by a VIA WM8950 processor running at 1 GHz, paired with a Mali-400 GPU. (Ah. Saved some there as well.) It's got 1GB of RAM, and either 8GB or 16GB or on-board storage, with a microSD slot for good measure. Plus you get 5GB of free online storage from ASUS.

Again, this is no Nexus 7 killer, but it's not supposed to be, either, and you can pick one up in white or pink, in addition to the usual black. (OK, the official colors are "Sugar White," "Titanium Gray" and "Cherry Pink.") ASUS didn't announce any specific regions or retailers, so be on the lookout for that, but it did say to expect the tablet this month.

Full presser and a shot of the sweet white and pink versions are after the break.

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T receiving minor update

Posted by wicked September - 18 - 2012 - Tuesday Comments Off

Android phones and tablets news:

Android Central

Well, how convenient. We've posted earlier today that the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T was getting a small bugfix update, and now the TF700T is getting its own. Similarly to the TF300T, this small update is bringing the model up to firmware version IML74K.US_epad-9.4.5.30-20120907, according to our forum members who have received it. The update is small, mostly updating the camera firmware and fixing some bugs here and there.

If you've got a Transformer Pad TF700T laying around, head to Settings > About tablet > Software updates and see if your device is ready to download the update. Once you get it, chime in in the forums and let us know how it's working.
